Exploring the Benefits of TENCEL

When it comes to shopping for eco-friendly clothing, you’ve probably heard a lot of different fabric terms thrown around. One of those terms might be TENCEL. But what exactly is TENCEL? And what are the benefits of TENCEL?

Learn more about the benefits of TENCEL essentials from Organic Basics and discover how you can easily incorporate this amazingly soft eco-friendly fabric into your wardrobe.

The Problem With Cotton

A lot of clothes and undergarments are made from cotton. Unfortunately, cotton is a resource-heavy crop with highly unsustainable production methods.

The first problem is that cotton farming can lead to land clearing that causes the loss of forest areas and other habitats. Once the cotton is planted, it requires a significant amount of water to grow. This is causing massive droughts as farmers divert rivers and streams to grow the crop.

In addition to being a thirsty crop, cotton is susceptible to disease and pests. Traditional cotton cultivation requires the use of a lot of pesticides and insecticides.

Not only are these chemicals polluting local eco-systems and water supplies, but they can also be toxic to the farmers who use them.

These are just some of the many reasons why sustainable clothing companies are turning to eco-friendly fabrics, such as TENCEL.

What Is TENCEL?

TENCEL is an eco-friendly fabric made by Lenzing. It’s created with responsibly sourced wood pulp from aspen and birch trees.

Aspen and birch trees grow quickly on low-grade land in central Europe. They use 80% less water when compared to cotton plants, which makes them incredibly environmentally responsible.

Rather than just go through and cut down all of the trees, they’re responsibly thinned out and the wood is turned into a pulp. This wood pulp is then dissolved in a closed-loop process that uses a non-toxic organic solvent. Finally, the solution is forced through tiny holes to create an amazing biodegradable fiber that feels softer, lighter, and silkier than cotton.

Of course, these aren’t the only benefits of TENCEL. Since TENCEL is lighter than cotton, it’s also prone to less wrinkling.

Is it a hot and sticky day outside? Then you’ll definitely appreciate the fact that TENCEL is breathable and more absorptive than cotton.
