How to Make a DIY Dry Carpet Cleaner
- Add all ingredients to a blender or food processor and blend them together. Leave the lid on until the powder settles.
- Pour the mixture into a glass jar with a shaker top lid for storage. You can also repurpose an empty Parmesan cheese container for this.
- To use, sprinkle liberally on dry carpet and leave anywhere from a few hours to overnight.
- For better coverage, use a broom or hand brush to spread the powder across the surface of your carpet and into the carpet fibers.
- Vacuum the powder as normal.
A Few Notes About Using This Natural DIY Carpet Cleaner
This natural carpet powder works like a champ because the combination of ingredients absorbs odors from the carpet while cleansing the fibers at the same time.
If you’re sensitive to scents, you can leave out the essential oils and use this DIY carpet powder unscented. On the other hand, if you would prefer a light fragrance, add about 30 drops of your favorite oil or combination of oils.
I prefer to use lavender because it leaves a nice, calming scent around the house. Lemon, orange, and grapefruit are also great options that do a fantastic job of cleaning and absorbing odors.

You need to use this carpet powder on DRY carpet. If you accidentally spill something on your carpet, use this DIY cleaner to remove the stain, wait until the area has completely dried, and then apply the carpet powder to freshen it up. If you use the carpet powder on wet carpet, the moisture will make it very difficult to remove.
The homemade carpet cleaning powder is ideal for weekly refreshes as well as heavy-duty cleanings in areas that get a lot of foot traffic.
As with any new cleaner, always test this carpet cleaner in an inconspicuous area before applying it to your whole carpet.
Why You Should Switch to This DIY Carpet Powder
Switching to a natural dry carpet cleaner is a simple yet impactful step toward a healthier, more eco-friendly home.
Conventional carpet cleaners and store-bought products are often packed with synthetic chemicals and artificial fragrances, which can leave behind harmful residues. These residues may irritate sensitive skin, trigger allergies, or even affect indoor air quality, especially if you have young children or pets who spend a lot of time close to the floor.

There are also many concerns about the toxicity of products used by professional carpet cleaners. These carpet cleaning solutions often contain harsh chemicals that pose significant health risks. This includes perchloroethylene and naphthalene, which are both probable carcinogens.
Not to mention, professional carpet cleaning services can get quite expensive! Fortunately, this dry cleaning powder is a cost-effective alternative.
It relies on non-toxic, gentle ingredients that are better for both your home environment and the planet. When you make your own, you skip the plastic packaging and eliminate any hidden, harsh additives. Plus, you can control exactly what goes into your mix.
