How to Make an Eco-Friendly Stainless Steel Cleaner
Make Your Appliances Shine With an Eco-Friendly Stainless Steel Cleaner
If you’re like me, you love the look of sparkling, streak-free stainless steel in your home. But finding an eco-friendly stainless steel cleaner that’s also effective can be a bit of a challenge.
Commercial cleaners often come with a list of ingredients that are anything but natural. So, I decided to experiment with some simple, non-toxic ingredients that are probably already in your kitchen.
After some trial and error, I found the perfect combination that leaves my stainless steel appliances looking shiny and new โ without any harsh chemicals. Here I’m sharing my go-to recipe for an eco-friendly stainless steel cleaner that’s easy to make and works like a charm!
Why It’s Important to Use an Eco-Friendly Stainless Steel Cleaner
When it comes to keeping our homes clean, it’s easy to reach for the nearest commercial cleaner without giving it much thought. But if you take a closer look at the labels on these products, you’ll often find a long list of chemicals that can be harmful not just to the environment, but also to our health.
For example, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) gives Weiman Stainless Steel Wipes a “D” grade because of health concerns related to asthma and the respiratory system, developmental and reproductive toxicity, and cancer.
One of the most concerning ingredients is polysorbate 80, which is a known human carcinogen that can cause cancer, reproductive toxicity, and genetic defects.

Additionally, many stainless steel cleaners contain ingredients like ammonia, chlorine, and synthetic fragrances, which can release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the air. These VOCs can contribute to indoor air pollution and may trigger allergies, asthma, and other respiratory issues.
Conventional stainless steel cleaners can also have a severe environmental impact. When we wash chemicals down the drain, they don’t just disappear โ they can end up in our water supply, soil, and even the food we eat.
Fortunately, eco-friendly cleaners are just as effective as their counterparts laden with toxic chemicals. They can leave your stainless steel appliances looking just as shiny and streak-free, all while giving you peace of mind that you’re making a positive choice for your home and the environment.
How to Make an Eco-Friendly Stainless Steel Cleaner
When you’re ready to make the switch, here’s a simple guide to making your own eco-friendly stainless steel cleaner using ingredients you probably already have at home. This natural stainless steel cleaner is non-toxic, cost-effective, and super easy to make!
Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup white vinegar
- 1/2 cup water
- 1-2 drops of liquid Castile soap (optional for extra cleaning power)
- 5-10 drops of essential oil (optional for a light fragrance)
- A reusable glass bottle
- A reusable paper towel
Steps:
- Mix the Ingredients:
- In a measuring cup or bowl, combine 1/2 cup of white vinegar and 1/2 cup of water. If you want a little extra cleaning power, add 1-2 drops of liquid Castile soap.
- Add Essential Oils:
- If you would like your cleaner to have a light scent, add 5-10 drops of your favorite essential oil to the mixture. Lemon essential oil is particularly effective for cutting through grease and leaving a fresh scent, but you can choose any oil you like.
- Pour Into Spray Bottle:
- Carefully pour the mixture into a clean spray bottle. Shake the bottle gently to mix everything together.
- Test on a Small Area:
- Before using the cleaner on your entire stainless steel appliance, test it on a small, inconspicuous area to make sure it doesn’t cause any streaks or damage.
- Spray and Wipe:
- Lightly spray the cleaner onto your stainless steel surfaces. Use a reusable paper towel to wipe the surface, following the grain of the stainless steel to avoid streaks.
- Buff for Extra Shine:
- After wiping down the surface, you can use a soft cloth and spot buff the stainless steel to a brilliant shine. You can also dip a clean cloth into olive oil and rub it in going with the direction of the grain to polish your appliance. Not only does olive oil remove streaks, but it also provides a natural protective film that helps prevent smudges.
- Store and Reuse:
- Store any leftover cleaner in a cool, dark place. Give the bottle a shake before each use to make sure the ingredients are well mixed.
And that’s it! You now have a natural, effective stainless steel cleaner that leaves your appliances looking fantastic without any harmful chemicals.
I like to use this eco-friendly stainless steel cleaner on our dishwasher because I feel like it always gets the dirtiest out of all of our appliances. It routinely seems to get water spots, fingerprints, and all other types of smudges on it, as you can see from this before photo.

And here’s how our dishwasher looks after I use this eco-friendly cleaner on it. I love how I can get this beautiful, streak-free shine without any effort or scrubbing!

The Benefits of Using an Eco-Friendly Stainless Steel Cleaner
Using an eco-friendly stainless steel cleaner comes with a host of benefits that go beyond just keeping your appliances gleaming. Here’s why making the switch to a natural cleaner is a win-win for both you and the environment:
Healthier Home Environment
One of the biggest advantages of eco-friendly cleaners is the absence of harsh chemicals. Traditional stainless steel cleaners often contain toxic ingredients that can release harmful fumes, contributing to indoor air pollution.

By opting for a natural cleaner, you’re reducing the risk of respiratory issues, skin irritation, and allergic reactions for you and your loved ones. A healthier home starts with the products you use, and eco-friendly options help ensure that your living space is as safe as it is clean.
Environmental Protection
When you use a natural stainless steel cleaner, you’re making a choice that’s kinder to the planet. Eco-friendly cleaners are typically biodegradable and free from harmful pollutants, meaning they break down more easily in the environment without leaving behind toxic residues.
This reduces the impact on our waterways, wildlife, and ecosystems. Every small change adds up, and by using a greener cleaner, you’re contributing to a larger effort to protect our Earth.
Cost-Effective and Sustainable
Many eco-friendly stainless steel cleaners are made from common household ingredients like vinegar, baking soda, and essential oils. Not only are these ingredients inexpensive, but they’re also versatile and can be used for a variety of cleaning tasks around your home. By making your own cleaner, you save money and reduce the need for multiple specialized products, cutting down on plastic waste and unnecessary packaging.
Safe Product for All Surfaces
Natural cleaners are gentle yet effective, making them safe to use on a variety of surfaces. While some commercial stainless steel cleaners can be too harsh and cause damage over time, an eco-friendly cleaner is less likely to scratch or dull your stainless steel. This means you can maintain the sleek, polished look of your appliances without worrying about long-term damage.
Pleasant and Customizable Scents
Eco-friendly cleaners often rely on essential oils for fragrance. Not only do they smell amazing, but they also offer aromatherapeutic benefits.
Whether you prefer the refreshing smell of lemon, the calming aroma of lavender, or the invigorating scent of peppermint, you can easily customize your cleaner to suit your mood and preferences. This makes your cleaning routine feel like less of a chore and more of a self-care ritual.
