Best Natural Deodorant for 2023

Feel free to share

The Best Natural Deodorant

If you’re trying to live a more natural and sustainable life, making the switch to a natural deodorant is an important step. But it’s also a difficult one. After all, you don’t want to stink! That’s why I put my own body to the test to help you find the best natural deodorant.

Why Switch to a Natural Deodorant?

By now, you’ve probably heard all the stories about aluminum and parabens in deodorant. Aluminum blocks the sweat glands to prevent your body from sweating. No sweat under your arms means no odor.

However, some people now believe that aluminum can cause cancer and Alzheimer’s disease. Currently, there’s no conclusive link between cancer and Alzheimer’s disease and aluminum-based antiperspirants.

Parabens, on the other hand, might be more concerning. Parabens are a preservative used to prevent bacteria from growing on deodorant. Unfortunately, your skin can absorb these parabens. Once they’re in your body, they can act like estrogen.

A higher lifetime exposure to estrogen has been linked to everything from an increase in breast cancer risk to a higher likelihood of autism developing in the womb.

Plus, it’s not just health concerns that should make you want to switch to a best natural deodorant. Natural deodorants are also better for sensitive skin, can help you avoid yellow sweat stains on your clothes, and could actually help you sweat less.

Helping You Find the Best Natural Deodorant

With all that in mind, I decided to make the switch to a natural deodorant. But here’s the thing: I knew my search wasn’t going to be easy.

I live in Florida, and I love to do outdoor activities like hiking, walking, kayaking, and bicycling. I’m also not one of those women who “glisten.” I sweat, and I’m not ashamed to say it. So I knew I would need a natural deodorant that could really perform.

To make this list of the best natural deodorants, the product had to pass a few requirements.

First and foremost, it had to actually work. If I had to reapply the deodorant multiple times throughout the day, it didn’t make the list. It also had to be easy on my sensitive skin. If I had to stop using it because it made my skin red and irritated, it didn’t make the list.

With all that in mind, here are the best natural deodorants that work for people who sweat.

First, Underarm Detox

When you’re making the switch to a natural deodorant, I highly recommend you do an underarm detox with this underarm detox bar. It will make your switch MUCH easier.

When you use a deodorant with aluminum, it clogs your pores. After you switch to a natural deodorant, your sweat glands might actually produce even more sweat than normal to clear out your pores.

By using this underarm detox bar during the transition, you can remove the chemicals so the natural deodorant can actually work.

1. Little Seed Farm

Little Seed Farm charcoal deodorant

Little Seed Farm is one of the eco-friendly deodorants that I personally use. This zero waste cream deodorant goes on smooth and lasts for 24 hours.

Not only is this deodorant not tested animals, but it’s also free of GMOs, parabens, gluten, and aluminum. A little bit of this deodorant goes a long way. You only need a pea-sized amount for each armpit.

Since my skin is sensitive to baking soda, I use this baking soda-free activated charcoal deodorant cream. It has a light minty scent that helps me feel fresh all day.

Other baking soda-free options include:

The zero waste deodorant comes in a glass jar with a metal lid. I’ve repurposed the jar to hold my zero waste toothpaste. You can also recycle the jar and lid.

2. Fat and the Moon

Fat and the Moon Sensitive Pit Deodorant

Another fantastic option for anyone with sensitive skin comes from Fat and the Moon. It’s made with arrowroot powder, coconut oil, and a few essentials oils for a fresh scent that’s easy on delicate skin.

The zero waste deodorant comes in a recyclable or reusable glass jar with a metal lid. It has a light, smooth texture, and it won’t leave any chalky white streaks on your black clothing.

Best of all, this cruelty-free and plastic-free deodorant is handmade in the USA using organic ingredients, so you know it’s good for your skin and the environment.

3. PiperWai

PiperWai believes that taking care of yourself shouldn’t come at the expense of the environment. That’s why this company makes a variety of sustainable personal care products that actually work!

One of their most popular products is their natural deodorant that uses activated charcoal to neutralize odor and absorb wetness. In addition to being free from harmful ingredients like aluminum, triclosan, and synthetic fragrances, these deodorants are safe and ideal for sensitive skin.

The natural deodorant cream has a smooth texture, provides long-lasting odor protection, and comes packaged in a container made of recycled ocean waste plastic. If you prefer traditional deodorant application, the natural deodorant sticks are available in essential oil scented or scentless varieties.

No matter which one you choose, you only need a little bit to enjoy outstanding freshness throughout the day!

Insider Tip: Looking to save a little money on your journey to more eco-friendly living? Then check out PiperWai’s imperfect deodorant sticks.

Every batch of deodorant usually ends up with a few funny-looking sticks that still work just as well as the normal ones. Rather than throw them away and create unnecessary waste, the company sells them at a discount!

4. Helmm

Are you looking for the best natural deodorant for men that smells great, looks good, and actually works? Then you need to take a look at Helmm.

Helmm’s aluminum-free deodorant is designed to neutralize body odor that’s caused when bacteria breaks down sweat. This cruelty-free and non-irritating deodorant is easy to apply and doesn’t leave behind any residue.

Plus, their innovative refill cartridge system drastically reduces plastic waste. Simply decide which durable, reusable container you would like, and then purchase the refill pods to pop inside. With scents that range from fresh and clean to warm and sensual, it’s easy to find the one you love.

And don’t worry ladies, although Helmm was originally designed for men, there’s absolutely no reason why you can’t enjoy using the invigorating deodorant as well. (Just take a look at all the positive reviews from women!)

5. EcoRoots

EcoRoots Deodorant Cream

EcoRoots offers two excellent zero waste deodorant options that work perfectly with all skin types. Since both options are baking soda-free, they’re ideal for those with sensitive skin.

The aluminum-free deodorant cream is made with organic ingredients that help fight odor all day long. This deodorant contains arrowroot powder, coconut oil, and unrefined shea butter to absorbs wetness and soften skin.

It comes in six luscious scents, including coconut, lavender, eucalyptus mint, citrus, rose geranium, and unscented. The vegan deodorant also comes packaged in a glass jar with a recyclable metal lid.

If you prefer using deodorant in a tube rather than a jar, you can go with this zero waste deodorant that comes in a compostable and recyclable paper tube. Like the cream, this deodorant uses natural and organic ingredients that work with your body to help reduce odor.

It’s also aluminum-free, baking-soda free, paraben-free, vegan, and cruelty-free. If you decide to use this deodorant, your scent options include coconut, lavender, and eucalyptus mint.

Both options are handmade in the United States in small batches to ensure freshness and eliminate the need for preservatives.

6. Pit Stop

Pit Stop is one of the best natural deodorants because it’s also a zero waste deodorant. It’s made with only natural, ethically sourced, organic ingredients and comes in a cardboard tube that you can toss in your compost bin when it’s empty.

It goes on clear, so it won’t stain your clothes. In addition to being cruelty-free, this deodorant is also free of aluminum, palm oil, and parabens.

This natural deodorant also comes in a variety of scents, including Lemongrass & Peppermint, Bergamot & Lime, and Tea Tree & Lavender. This makes it easy to find the one you like.

Since applying deodorant that’s in a cardboard tube can sometimes feel a little different, here’s a helpful tip I’d like to pass along. If the tube is cold and the deodorant is hard, hold the tube between your hands or under your arms for a few minutes to warm it up and make it easier to apply the deodorant.

7. We Love the Planet

We Love the Planet makes an organic natural deodorant that doesn’t contain any aluminum or synthetic substances. It uses beeswax and coconut oil to soothe and hydrate skin, corn starch powder to make it easier to spread, baking soda to neutralize odors, and citrus fruit oils and herbs for a light, clean scent.

Best of all, it’s completely free of plastic packaging and comes in a tin case you can either reuse or recycle when you’re done. Plus, it comes from one of the best zero waste online shops, so you know you’re making a truly sustainable choice that’s better for your health and the environment.

8. Meow Meow Tweet

Meow Meow Tweet is another great option for a natural and zero waste deodorant. Once again, you have a variety of options, so you should have no problem finding one that will suit your needs.

You can get a baking soda free deodorant stick in a paper tube, or a deodorant stick in a paper tube that contains baking soda.

You can also get a baking soda free natural deodorant cream or a natural deodorant cream with baking soda. Both options come in a glass jar that you can either reuse or recycle when it’s empty. If you decide to try the cream, I recommend getting this reusable bamboo applicator stick to make it easier to apply.

No matter which option you decide on, you can feel good knowing you’re getting a product that’s vegan, cruelty free, and made with natural, certified organic, and fair trade ingredients.

You can get Meow Meow Tweet deodorants at EarthHero. If you decide to choose this best natural deodorant, be sure to use the code EARTHFRIENDLY to take 10% off your order!

10. Lakeside Natural Apothecary

Lakeside Natural Apothecary believes that anything you put on your skin should also be good enough to eat. That’s why this natural deodorant bar doesn’t contain any aluminum, parabens, preservatives, or artificial fragrances and dyes.

If you have sensitive skin, you’ll also be pleased to know the deodorant doesn’t contain any baking soda. Instead, the deodorant uses arrowroot powder and food-grade bentonite clay to absorb moisture and essential oils for a fresh scent.

Cardboard tube of Chagrin Valley Soap and Salve natural deodorant

Not only does Chagrin Valley Soap & Salve Company make great shampoo bars, but they also offer a fine selection of natural deodorants. One effective option is the zero waste deodorant stick.

The deodorant stick in the compostable cardboard tube comes in numerous scents for men and women. This is the deodorant my husband uses. He says it works great for him, and I can attest that it does an excellent job of fighting odor.

If you prefer using something other than a cardboard tube, that’s not a problem. They also offer all of their fantastic scents in a reusable or recyclable glass jar. You simply need this small bamboo spatula to scoop some out and apply it to your skin.

The natural deodorant is made with organic cornstarch to soothe skin and absorb perspiration, baking soda to ward off odor-causing bacteria, and virgin coconut oil, which has antibacterial properties that help naturally neutralize odor.

If at First You Don’t Succeed

When you’re making the switch to a natural deodorant, I want to encourage you not to give up if you don’t find one that works right away. I tried numerous different brands when making this list, and not all of them worked for me.

We’re all different, and we all have different chemistries. What works for one person doesn’t always work for the next.

However, your health and the health of this planet are too important to stick with something that’s toxic. Just keep trying, and I’m sure you’ll find a natural deodorant that works for you.

Just had a chance to try Superdeodorant. It comes in a yellow metal tin and it is amazing. You don't need much either, two little dabs will do and rub it around. The first tin I got I thought it was too small, here I am two months in and still have lots left! This summer with the humidity and heat waves it was unbearable. We were all a giant sweat ball, but no STINK! You can garden in the hot blistering sun for 8 hours, full on drenched and not reek. Please add it to your list, it's that darn good!
