Why Use Homemade Toilet Cleaning Tablets
Store-bought toilet cleaning tablets can contain all types of toxic chemicals you don’t want around your family.
For example, the Environment Working Group (EWG) gives the Scrubbing Bubbles Drop-Ins toilet bowl cleaner an F grade. This is because it has a high concern for developmental and reproductive toxicity and some concern for cancer, skin irritation and allergies, and asthma/respiratory irritation.
These are just some of the troubling ingredients found in this toilet cleaner:
- Sodium Borate- Has a high concern for the effects on the developmental and reproductive systems.
- Hydroxyethylcellulose- Has some concern for damage to vision, skin irritation, effects to the respiratory system, and allergic reactions.
- Fatty Alcohols- A non-specific ingredient that could hide other ingredients known to cause allergic reactions and damage to organs.
- Sodium Dodecylbenzenesulfonate- Some concern for aquatic toxicity, allergic reactions, damage to vision, and harmful effects to the developmental and reproductive systems.
- Fragrance- A non-specific ingredients that could hide hundreds of other ingredients known to cause aquatic toxicity and damage to the respiratory system.
Like I said, these are just some of the ingredients contained in one cleaning tablet. The sad thing is, these ingredients are completely unnecessary because you don’t need a ton of toxic chemicals to clean your toilet.

Homemade Toilet Cleaning Tablets
So now that you know why you should ditch that dangerous store-bought toilet cleaner, you’re ready to make your own homemade toilet cleaning tablets. All you need to do is follow these simple steps.
Toilet Cleaning Tablet Ingredients
- 1 cup of baking soda
- ¼ cup of citric acid
- ½ cup of white vinegar powder
- ½ teaspoon of white vinegar
- 20 drops essential oils (optional)
- Compostable parchment paper
- Tablespoon
Toilet Cleaning Tablet Directions
- Add the baking soda, citric acid, and white vinegar powder in a bowl and mix until they’re combined.
- Pour the vinegar into a separate container.
- If you want your toilet cleaning tablets to have a scent, add about 20 drops of your preferred essential oil to the vinegar.
- Slowly pour the vinegar into the powders and stir until the mixture begins to clump.
- Wait until the mixture stops puffing up and begins to stiffen before trying to make the tablets. This can take anywhere from 15 to 45 minutes.
- Use the tablespoon to scoop out the mixture. Pack it tightly with your fingers and then place the scoops on the compostable parchment paper. Repeat until you have no more mixture remaining. Don’t forget to compost your parchment paper when you’re done!
- If your tablets are dry and crumbling, spray them with a light spritz of vinegar.
- Let the tablets dry overnight then store them in an airtight container.
- To use, drop one tablet in your toilet. When it stops fizzing, use your toilet brush to scrub the toilet clean.
